Student-Centred Spelling: You're Not the Boss of Me!

Looking for a new approach to teaching spelling?
Want to brush up on your own knowledge about spelling instruction?
Picture
In order to spell well, students need to increase their linguistic knowledge for spelling, while effectively using multiple spelling strategies (Westwood, 2008).  This day of professional learning will assist teachers to answer the following questions:
  • How can a student-centred approach to spelling instruction be implemented in your classroom?
  • What linguistic knowledge is necessary for spelling competency?
  • What are some effective spelling strategies?
  • What are the benefits of personal lists?
  • Is it possible to marry student-centred spelling with other approaches and programs?
Participants will:
  • engage with research about spelling instruction
  • explore a range of practices, routines and strategies that can be used to scaffold student spelling knowledge
  • understand the sources that could increase teacher self-efficacy for spelling instruction
  • collaborate with colleagues to plan for delivery of professional learning in each participant's own educational context

Ideal for teachers of Years 2 - 6.
Date:   Wednesday, March 20, 2019 (Week 9 ACT)
Time:   9:00am to 3:00pm
Venue: MacKillop House and Conference Centre, Lyneham
              Ample free parking
             Morning tea and lunch provided

Cost:
$220 per participant (including GST)
